65 Projects funded to help Queenslanders bounce back after fires, floods, storms, or cyclones!
The Queensland Government is supporting Queenslanders to bounce back quicker after fires, floods, storms, or cyclones with a nearly $25 million investment in disaster preparedness.
When it comes down to extreme weather events and their impactful consequences, we can safely say that we have had our fair share of experiences.
To help Queenslanders bounce back quicker after the challenges brought by fires, storms, floods, and cyclones, the Queensland Government announced that it will invest nearly $25 million in disaster preparedness across our state to increase its resilience.
The money has been distributed across 65 projects which include over $19 million of joint Queensland ($8.3 million) and Federal Government ($10.7 million) funding with projects from the Gold Coast to the Torres Cape. Key projects include the purchase of important equipment - such as backup generators and rain gauges - as well as disaster management training and other awareness-raising activities.
The projects focus on a vast range of initiatives that span from technology developed by Griffith University to predict storm surge heights and dynamic tide levels to upgrading sewage systems to prevent overflows during wet weather. They will also include support for our First Nation Communities and an investment of almost $1 million towards supporting the wellbeing and mental health of Queenslanders.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Murray Watt said that the diverse range of projects is aimed to reduce the risks during disasters by providing better infrastructure and warning systems, while also ensuring Queenslanders can bounce back from previous disasters.
And he added “For too long the focus has been on how we recover after an event. Our Government is investing in preparedness before an event occurs.”
