Stage 2 is wrapping up: Here’s what we’ve been up to
As Stage 2* of our project is coming to a close, we wanted to share what we've been up to.
Regeneration and Resilience workshop series
We have just wrapped up our "Regeneration and Resilience" workshop series – two events filled with connection, learning, and hands-on experience along the Brook! A fantastic group of local property owners came together to kick off their journey of backyard restoration.
Our first workshop in October helped them explore the Brook’s unique ecosystem. They met neighbouring creek carers, shared stories and reflections and set restoration goals for their own backyard. They also engaged with experts from Healthy Land & Water and Bligh Tanner to understand more about site assessments and stream processes as well as from Bushtekniq to learn about local plant and weed identification. Everyone left with a comprehensive resource pack to guide their restoration journey.
Then in November, participants all turned up and braved the rain with great smiles and high spirits, participating in hands-on sessions focussed on understanding erosion management and learning weeding and vegetation restoration techniques.
We look forward to seeing the positive changes they'll implement on their properties along the journey of regeneration and resilience!
Resources for residents
We've put together a set of resources that are freely available to all residents - whether you attended our workshops, you are just curious, or you are starting your restoration journey. These materials can come in handy along your own backyard restoration journey.
Check out our resources here: https://hlw.org.au/get-involved/kedron-brook-resources
We've got:
• PDF version of the workbook that was given to workshop participants (Kedron Brook Riverine Recovery Workbook).
• All the questions people asked (and answers!) during workshops.
• Detailed videos, produced by Bushtekniq, covering practical sessions on:
o Erosion https://youtu.be/jNxIfFdqILg.
o Weeding https://youtu.be/3jZaoZfFnRM.
o Planting https://youtu.be/_L1EDm0pFiQ.
Note: We've added captions (subtitles) to all videos. These may automatically appear depending on your YouTube settings. Should you wish to turn them on or off while watching, you can do so by clicking the "CC" button in the bottom right corner of the YouTube video player.
Assessments and designs
Throughout this stage our team worked closely with Bligh Tanner, diving deep into ecological surveys, flood modelling, site assessments and design.
We are currently completing detailed designs of three priority reaches along the Brook, that will be submitted for state approval.
The designs, focusing on nature-based solutions, are confined to the channel and immediately adjacent riparian areas. Should any designed interventions be located adjacent to your property, the Healthy Land & Water team will be contacting you directly to discuss the designs and proposed works.
We will keep you informed about the project's progress and the potential advancement to Stage 3*.
What’s next: Stage 3*
The next stage is pending approval and will focus on continuing the great work of previous stages. We're committed to building on the foundations we've established and maintaining the momentum of this project.
In this upcoming stage, we'll be seeking state approvals for proposed designs at the three priority sites along the reach. These approvals will help us progress to planning on-ground works.
We'll also continue our community engagement and education efforts, keeping you informed about our progress and any developments.
