Grants of up to $400,000 are now open to Traditional Owners, community groups, individuals and state and territory governments for projects that protect, restore and manage National Heritage-listed places. Applications for the 2024-25 grant round are open until 25 October 2024.
New partnership emerges to drive large-scale investment in nature restoration in SEQ.
01 October 2024: South East Queensland has a new coalition of the willing – uniting government, private sector, industry, and community partners to drive much-needed new sources of finance into landscape-scale nature restoration in the region.
The new “ENVestor South-East Queensland” program, launched today, recognises that additional investment is needed if SEQ is to realise opportunities through the repair, restoration and regeneration of SEQ’s land, forests and waterways.
“Put simply, stemming the decline of our environment – including growing threats to our biodiversity, increasing fire and flood risk and the potential loss of our food security - is going to take billions not millions,” says Julie McLellan, CEO of the peak group for the environment in South East Queensland, Healthy Land & Water.
“The only way to get there is to think much bigger, and getting to landscape-scale takes landscape-scale funding and partnerships.”
Even though we think every day is a koala-ity day, September was officially Save the Koala Month. South East Queensland (SEQ) has the greatest concentration of koalas in the state but the population of our beloved fuzzies is in decline. There’s now a great new app you can report sightings.
As the population of South East Queensland continues to grow, so does the demand for fresh, potable water. In response to this challenge, Seqwater has tasked Healthy Land & Water with a critical project aimed at preserving the water quality of the North Pine catchment.
Building stronger, more resilient grazing landscapes and healthier native vegetation across South East Queensland has never been more important. We’ve just had word that a great project we’ve been rolling out which focuses on just that has been extended another four years until 2028, which is welcome news for landholders and climate exposed regions.

This year one of the Healthy Land & Water team, Karis, joined the Queensland committee for National Science Week, which is held in August every year. It’s always a fun week, jam-packed with events to help educate, inspire and educate about science and technology.
One of the events Karis attended as part of the lineup was a soapbox science event where she was treated to a novel look at why tangents and diverse and divergent perspectives are a good thing in science.
We asked her to report on her experiences.
