Greater Glider Forest Park protected area announced for Queensland
One of Queensland’s cutest animals, the greater glider, will now have more room to soar with the announcement of a Greater Glider Forest Park as part of a move to protect vital habitats of our important native species.
A top contender for Australia’s cutest animal (sorry koalas, we love you too), the greater glider will have more room to soar with the Queensland Government’s announcement of a Greater Glider Forest Park.
This area will create 54,000 hectares of land to be protected as part of a wider plan to prioritise growing Queensland’s protected areas.
The greater glider (Petauroides Volans) is Australia’s largest gliding possum and was listed as endangered in 2022.
With the majority of greater gliders calling Queensland home, this new park will protect their vital habitats and is an important step in protecting this native species.
Since 2015, 1.88 million hectares of land has been added to the protected area system, taking the total to 15 million hectares now protected.
This follows the recent announcement that a further 12,000 ha is being added to protected area estate for use as national forest and conservation park.
A win for the environment and a win for our most important (and cutest) native species.
