Healthy Land & Water has been guiding decision makers using its comprehensive monitoring, big data and world-leading analytics expertise for 22+ years.
The funding to address environmental issues is limited and despite the enormous amount of work to date to slow the declines we are seeing in our beautiful, biodiverse region, it has not been enough to turn the tide. Our aim is to come up with cutting edge tools and systems to turn this around.
…and making it even cleverer.
We are now looking to develop a system which makes the work we’ve been doing for 22+ years to advise the best use of available resources for best benefit, available online at the touch of a button.
It is a very big aim, and it will take some time, but work is already well underway. We figured Healthy Land & Water developed the monitoring and Report Card program which has since been emulated around Australia and the world …so who better to get stuck into looking for a trailblazing solution for this big regional and global issue.
Our early work has been using clever data systems (Bayesian networks) to understand and prioritise actions to manage threats to koalas, rivers and coastal ecosystems. We are also looking at how to inspire investments in incremental timeframes that are more meaningful for decision-makers.
Clever ways of using limited funding and resources to turn around the decline
We need to do something so innovative because this is an insidious problem.
We have conducted a world-leading ecosystem monitoring program which has for two decades years tracked a slow decline in the health of our ecological systems. This has been caused by a variety of factors, in particular poorly targeted and insufficiently scaled investment that has failed to claw back losses from development and the impacts of climate change through fire, flood and drought. We need to do something differently and urgently.

Healthy Land & Water is delving into a world-leading initiative using innovative statistical methods and financial mechanisms, that builds upon its 22 years of ecological and ecosystem services framework trend data.
It is looking at the intricacies of linking this to a landscape approach for financing restoration that is already delivering outcomes at scale elsewhere in the world.
Getting ready to showcase the region
South East Queensland is a region in Australia highly valued both for its biodiversity and lifestyles.
In 2010, we developed an ecosystem services framework and estimated the value of these services to exceed US$28bn/y.
The region attracts new residents at approximately 75,000 per year and aside from the economic growth from infrastructure and housing, there is also enormous tourism value.
In addition, the Olympic and Paralympic Games will showcase us to the world in 2032.
Our aim is to create tools which direct investment so we are able to flip the narrative from decline to opportunity, and position our beautiful region for success in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and well beyond.
This is a pivotal way of building a ‘green’ Olympics legacy through technically-robust and economically-viable mechanisms for nature positive investment in South East Queensland.
