Expanding the known population of Davidsonia johnsonii

Flora surveys to save endangered species Davidsonia johnsonii.

Davidsonia johnsonii has highly restricted distribution in Northeast NSW and Southeast Queensland (SEQ).

Of the known populations, only a handful occur in SEQ. In addition, due to the reproductive biology of this species, the actual number of genetically distinct individuals may be very low.

Currently, the species is listed as endangered at a State (NCA) and National (EPBC) level.

Locating any new populations will substantially improve the persistence of this species in the landscape.

The project focuses on:

  • Conducting five flora surveys in five different locations.
  • Incorporating all new records into relevant conservation databases.
  • Preparing updated species distribution and habitat maps.
  • A Field Day to raise awareness.

What we are doing

Davidsonia Johnsonii stipulesThe information collected will be used to prepare updated species distribution and habitat maps for Davidsonia Johnsonii.

The activities for this project, involve:

  • Conducting five targeted flora surveys for new Davidsonia johnsonii populations.
  • Incorporating acquired point records into the City of Gold Coast flora and fauna GIS database and WildNet (State Gov).
  • Hosting a Field Day to raise awareness of Davidsonia johnsonii within the local community.

Measuring success

As a result, this project will allow us to gather data on existing Davidsonia Johnsonii populations.

The information obtained from the surveys will be used to prepare updated species distribution and habitat maps for Davidsonia johnsonii in Queensland.

In addition, this project will document physical site conditions and vegetation characteristics, collect age/size class information, improve population estimates, identify specific site threats, and formulate site management actions needed to ensure the continued persistence of new populations.

Why this project is important

Davidsonia johnsonii is one of 103 plants (and 38 animals) designated as Priority Species for Conservation by the City of Gold Coast.

In addition, due to the reproductive biology of this species, the actual number of genetically distinct individuals may be very low. Currently, the species is listed as endangered at a State (NCA) and National (EPBC) level.

Catchment:  Gold Coast
Timing: April 2022 - June 2023 (Completed)
Budget: $85,000

This project is supported by Healthy Land & Water, through funding from the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

What's next

Healthy Land & Water has conducted three surveys so far and was able to locate other EPBC and NCA species that have been recorded, which will contribute to our knowledge of threatened plant species on the Gold Coast.
