Tips for becoming a better recycler
Recycling is one of the easiest ways to do your bit for the planet, but it can be tricky to navigate.
By recycling right, you can help keep waste out of landfill, protect the environment and help tackle climate change. The best part? You’ll contribute to preserving our beautiful and biodiverse region in South East Queensland.
Here are some simple ways to become a recycling pro at home, work or school.
Be a litter legend
If you’re out and about enjoying the great outdoors, consider pick up any rubbish you see in the natural environment and dispose of it appropriately. Even if it’s not your rubbish, we can all play our part to prevent litter from entering our waterways.
Single use – no way!
Avoid single-use items as much as possible, particularly plastic water bottles and coffee cups. The best way to stay hydrated is to nominate an emotional support water bottle. It has your back in more ways than one.
Reduce food waste
Where possible, reduce the amount of food you toss. Try out meal prep (it’s popular for a reason!) or invest in a composting bin for your food scraps.
Know your products
Your new obsession begins now. Up your recycling game by becoming familiar with the Australian Recycling Labels. These labels can be found on the packaging of most products and provide guidance on how to dispose of waste correctly – check it before you chuck it.
Know how to recycle right
Not all councils recycle the same way – some don’t accept all materials, and some have different infrastructure. If you move to a different council area, be sure to check their website for the local requirements on what can and can’t be recycled in your area.
Circles are the best shape
Reduce your waste use and be part of the circular economy – reduce, reuse, recycle, refuse, rethink and repair as much as possible to keep items out of landfill.
Get your hands dirty
Make an impact in your local community by getting involved in a clean-up program near you. Look out for volunteering opportunities with your local council or community groups.
More than just doing the right thing
Remember, by recycling correctly, you’re not just reducing landfill—you're conserving energy, protecting our biodiversity, and helping our beautiful environment in South East Queensland thrive.
