Dr Valerie Cooms belongs to the Nunukul people of Minjerribah or North Stradbroke Island in Queensland.

Valerie has worked in government for many years, was CEO of Queensland South Native Title Services and more recently was appointed as a Member of the National Native Title Tribunal. Valerie previously served as a Director of Indigenous Business Australia and is currently Chair of the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Registered Native Title Body Corporate as well the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Independent School and is also a Member of the AIATSIS Native Title Research Advisory Committee.
