Healthy Land & Water’s Queensland Fire and Biodiversity Consortium (QFBC) is working with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) to help Queensland communities become more bushfire resilient and maintain a healthy environment.

Five years after the devastating Black Summer bushfires of 2019–2020, Queensland flora and fauna species are still slowly recovering. In collaboration with the Australian Government and various dedicated groups, we’re doing a pulse check on various wildlife species that were affected by these bushfires.

In the Queensland Fire and Biodiversity Consortium (QFBC) team’s years of running workshops, our presenters have seen attendees’ knowledge and awareness of bushfire risks and management techniques mature over time. This is in large part thanks to the great advocacy work of our local and state government, various bushfire planning and emergency service partners, and dedicated community members that attend and network at our bushfire workshops. While bushfire awareness building and planning is still essential in many areas around the state, we’ve heard the call from landholders for more advanced learnings and practical tips.

They may be small, but jewel beetles are making a mighty impact helping to restore South East Queensland’s waterways and native ecosystems.

As part of the Regional Riparian Weed Control Program, made possible through funding from Seqwater, these tiny beetles are being released at key sites across South East Queensland (SEQ) to combat the invasive Cat’s Claw creeper (Dolichandra unguis-cati).

Despite their size, jewel beetles are proving to be powerful allies in restoring native vegetation, stabilising riverbanks, and protecting the quality of our water.

Healthy Land & Water recently hosted two successful National Koala Monitoring Program (NKMP) training workshops bringing together representatives from SEQ local councils, CSIRO, the Queensland Government Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI), and First Nations groups from around SEQ, fostering crucial partnerships.
