Surfrider Foundation Australia - Sunshine Coast Branch
The Clean Up Double Island campaign is a bi-annual clean-up, camping and educational weekend, where an annual average of five tonnes of marine debris and campers rubbish are removed by up to 300 volunteers.
The project engages people on the beach with rewarding educational presentations; and the broader community through media exposure, online videos and a world first plastics recycling initiative. In 2016, Surfrider Foundation collectively removed more than 4.5 tonnes of marine debris and leftover campers rubbish from more than 60kms of beaches and dunes.
Approximately 70% of the rubbish collected was a plastic product and through a partnership with Newtec Poly, the rubbish that was contaminated by salt and sand was sorted and turned into a public park bench which was gifted to Noosa Council and the community.
