Finalist: Volunteer of the Year Award
Joel Fostin is a mature age student, horticulturist and woodworker from the Sunshine Coast. Joel has become a champion for protecting the familiar coastal Pandanus tree, which has been under attack for 20 years from the introduced leafhopper bug from Far North Queensland. He has volunteered many hours tackling Pandanus dieback and promoting community awareness about threatened coastal rainforests and their management needs.
Pandanus trees are essential for stabilising dunes and headlands but have suffered extensive dieback due to the leafhopper bug. Joel works with local experts, Traditional Owners and researchers to find solutions to the leafhopper threat.
