Energy Crop Trial
Boonah Sewage Treatment Plant and Toogoolawah Sewage Treatment Plant

In an Australian-first, Queensland Urban Utilities' (QUU) Energy Crop Trial re-uses treated effluent from the Toogoolawah and Boonah Sewage Treatment Plants to irrigate four hectares of onsite crops. This is expected to prevent 1,400kg of nitrogen and 700kg of phosphorous from entering our waterways annually.

This innovative trial yields environmental benefits beyond waterway health - it will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the planting of Pongamia trees. Seeds from the trees will ultimately be converted into biofuel to run QUU's fleet vehicles, reducing QUU's environmental footprint.
