Finalist: Government Stewardship Award
Sunshine Coast Council
Waterways on the Sunshine Coast are highly valued by the community but are under increasing pressure. In 2008, 98% of construction sites were found to be causing unlawful water contamination and the quality of water sensitive urban design assets donated by developments was found to be poor.
To combat this, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council created the Hydraulics and Water Quality Unit. The Unit is responsible for protecting waterways from the impacts of development during both construction and final development stages.
Achievements of the Unit to date include:
- promotion of the streetscape bioretention concept and production;
- development of standard water sensitive urban design conditions and inspection regimes; and
- creation and implementation of a strategy for regulating erosion and sediment control.
