Gold Coast City Council
Public interest in waterways health has led to an increase in community participation in waterway monitoring, management and education. The Gold Coast Waterwatch program, funded by Gold Coast City Council and coordinated by Natura Education, allows local students to get their hands dirty while fostering ownership and increasing understanding of environmental management.
The Program utilises the natural resources of the Gold Coast as outdoor classrooms, allowing participants to be involved in locally based water investigations, greening degraded areas, environmental inquiries and scientific monitoring.
Since 2009, participation rates have doubled to over 3000 students each year. Gold Coast Waterwatch distributes newsletters, junior scientist awards, macroinvertebrate stickers and updated data sheets. It also delivers competitions and environmental activities such as catchment cleanups and tree planting days.
